Los Angeles Awarded the 2028 Olympic Summer Games

Los Angeles was selected to host the 2028 Olympic Summer Games. This selection was part of a deal with Paris, France, in which Paris will host the 2024 Olympic Games.

Los Angeles has hosted the Summer Olympic Games twice before, in 1932 and 1984, and it already has many facilities and locations for the summer sporting events.

Hosting the Games in 2028 will help put the USOC’s failed 2016 Chicago bid behind it for good and could be an opportunity to boost tourism on the West coast.

President Donald Trump affirmed his support of Los Angeles' bid for the 2028 Olympic bid in a meeting with the IOC’s President Thomas Bach at the White House on June 22, 2017. This meeting was the first time an IOC President has visited the White House since 1980, when the then-IOC President met with President Jimmy Carter to try to prevent the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow.

Out-of-control financial costs - particularly for construction and security matters - have plagued recent Olympic Games and remain a very real concern for Los Angeles in 2028. These costs for construction and security have increased dramatically due to the world economy, overly elaborate construction plans, and increased terrorism. The result of the cost overruns often is long-term financial detriment to the host city.
