Firm Assists With Sea Island Conservation Easement

Moorhead Law Group, LLC is pleased to announce the recent completion of a conservation matter along the Atlantic coast. The firm had the opportunity to help a client with conserving a significant portion of Sea Island, Georgia, one of the premier islands along the eastern seaboard.

The owner of Sea Island Resort and several environmental groups had been involved in a long-running dispute regarding certain development on Sea Island. As part of a resolution to the dispute, the parties agreed to place a conservation easement on approximately 80 acres of land at the southern end of the island.

The firm represented the St. Simons Land Trust, which was chosen as the party to hold and manage the easement. Under applicable law, a conservation easement must be held by a qualified private land conservation organization or the government. The parties to the settlement agreement unanimously agreed that the St. Simons Land Trust, with its record of stewardship in the area, was the best choice to hold this easement. On behalf of the land trust, the firm prepared and negotiated the terms of the easement.

Sea Island and the adjacent St. Simons Island are two of the four islands on the coast of Georgia known as the Golden Isles. The area is known for its stately live oaks, abundant salt and fresh water marshes, many creeks and rivers, and rich history.

The St. Simons Land Trust, an accredited land trust, is a leader is conserving the natural and historical features of the St. Simons Island area, having preserved approximately 1,000 acres of land since its founding.
